Church Planting Update: New Creation Church in Granville, New York

Kenny Stokes

Pastor for Church Planting

I am often asked, “What’s happening in church planting?” My response is, “There’s always something happening in church planting.”

From the time I began my new role as Pastor for Church Planting, on October 30 of last year, I knew that I needed to “play catch up” with the grace that God had already given us in church planting. One of those “graces” is Joel Aubrey and his wife, Holly.

After graduating from Bethlehem Seminary in May 2015, Joel and his family returned to their home church, Adamsville Community Baptist in Fort Edward, New York, with a vision for a new church in a neighboring town. In November 2016, Joel’s home church ordained him as a minister of the gospel and also commissioned him and a core group to plant New Creation Church in Granville.

One of the things we have been praying is that during the seminary years at Bethlehem, God would knit together ministry teams. In answer to that prayer, Brian Verett and his wife, Angela, joined the planting team in 2016 after Brian completed his ThM at Bethlehem College & Seminary.

With a core group of about 20, the church began meeting. Joel and his team had prayed about one particular building in the heart of Granville as an ideal place for their public worship services. After some conversations with the owner of the building, New Creation Church signed a purchase agreement to buy it in early January for about $55,000. The church began to pray in earnest for the funds in January. God answered their prayers, providing the funds through the generous giving of the church and other supporters. On March 17, New Creation Church purchased the building. Praise God!

Since then, the church has been laboring together to renovate the building for use as their meeting space with hopes that the building will be useful also for the community of Granville. Joel writes in a recent blog post,

As most of you are probably aware, we closed last month on a very large (13,000 square foot) building on Main Street in Granville. We paid $55,000 cash for it that the Lord provided through the gifts of many friends and family members. The building now belongs to us—debt free—along with the very large to-do list that came with it! We are super thankful that we don't have to tackle this list alone. This past Friday / Saturday our sending church [in] Adamsville had two "Mission Days" at our building. Dozens of friends and family members from the area pitched in to help us go into "demolition mode" on the building. Below are some pictures taken from these days.

Please watch the vision video and pray for New Creation Church …

  • Thank God for his grace and provision of this building
  • Pray for countless opportunities to meet and love and speak the gospel to the people of Granville
  • Pray for the elders as they shepherd the flock
  • Pray for the ongoing work of building renovation, that the process will be unifying and mission-fulfilling and not a distraction.
  • Pray that Bethlehem and the Treasuring Christ Together Network might increasingly be a means of grace and support for the church.
